TITLE: OVERWRITER

CHARACTER: LEO (19) - A stressed college student, exhausted and surrounded by books.

[SCENE START] INT. LEO'S DORM ROOM -

NIGHT The room is dark, illuminated only by the harsh, cold glare of a laptop screen.

LEO (19) sits hunched over his desk. Textbooks and empty energy drink cans litter the space. Leo rubs his eyes, sighing. His gaze drifts down to his desk. Lying next to his keyboard is an old, scratched-up SD CARD. It looks burnt around the edges. Curious, Leo picks it up. He pushes it into his laptop’s built-in card reader.

CLICK. The laptop screen suddenly flashes violently. Severe digital artifacting and glitched imagery distortion rip across the display. A low, agonizing audio drone hums from the speakers. Leo reacts, shielding his eyes from the screen's sudden, aggressive strobe effect. He mashes the escape key. Nothing happens. Terrified by the sudden system hijack, he SLAMS the laptop lid shut. The room plunges into near-total darkness. Only the heavy, ragged breathing of Leo fills the silence. He sits frozen, waiting. Three seconds pass. Suddenly, across the room, a sharp WHIRRING sound cuts through the quiet. Leo spins around. Sitting on a shelf is an old Nintendo Wii console. It is completely unplugged. A piercing, neon-blue light suddenly ERUPTS from the Wii’s disc slot. The blue glow is intense, casting long, sharp shadows across the room and painting Leo’s face in a sickly cyan hue. Leo edges backward in his chair, his eyes wide with fear.

MECHANICAL CLICK. The Wii's front SD card flap pops open. Slowly, a burnt SD card slides out of the slot, clicking into place as if waiting to be taken. Leo stares at it, paralyzed. Suddenly, the blue light from the Wii snaps off, plunging the room back into pitch blackness.

CUT TO: EXTREME CLOSE-UP: LEO'S FACE The darkness shatters as Leo’s eyes instantly SNAP open. His pupils are gone. His eyes glow with a piercing, vibrant digital blue light. An eerie, mechanical echo resonates from deep within his chest. It is a cold, synthesized text-to-speech engine, booming from inside him:

DIGITAL VOICE (V.O.) Overwrite complete. Leo’s face goes completely blank and expressionless. The digital blue light in his eyes slowly fades back to normal black pupils. He stares forward into the dark, entirely hollow.

FADE TO BLACK. [SCENE END]

The SDcard was cursed and because it is silicon and sand and gold and electricity this is a form of alchemy and has let loose and evil spirit that creates .exe like people.

INT. LEO'S DORM ROOM / APARTMENT - CONTINUOUS MAYA (21) stands in the doorway, holding a glass of water. She stares at Leo, who is sitting perfectly still in the dark. MAYA Leo? What was that noise? Did the power go out? Leo slowly turns his head toward her. His movement is slightly rigid, like a robotic hinge. LEO The power is functioning at maximum efficiency. Maya frowns, stepping into the room. She reaches for the light switch and flips it. The lights flicker violently, sparking once, but stay off. MAYA Gross, Leo, did you spill something? On the floor beneath Leo’s desk, a pile of fine, gray silicon sand is steadily leaking out from the cuffs of his jeans. Leo stands up. As his bare feet hit the floor, a tiny arc of blue static electricity leaps from his heel to the metal frame of his bed. Maya backs up, her hand instinctively reaching into her pocket. Her smartphone vibrates aggressively. She pulls it out. The screen illuminates her face. The Digital Ouija App they were playing with earlier has launched itself. On screen, the digital planchette violently drags itself across the letters: G-O-L-E-M. Maya looks up, terrified. MAYA Leo... what did you put in the computer? Leo takes a step toward her. His skin looks strangely matte, like unpolished stone. He raises his hand. A faint, hum of electrical current emits from his fingers. LEO / DIGITAL VOICE The vessel is refined. The sand has captured the lightning. Maya drops her glass of water. The moment the water hits the floor near Leo's feet, it instantly evaporates into a cloud of scalding steam, sizzling against the electric heat radiating from his body.

INT. LIVING ROOM - CONTINUOUS Maya stumbles backward out of Leo's bedroom, her phone still buzzing in her hand. Leo follows her into the living room, his movements terrifyingly smooth. Maya looks down at her phone screen. The digital Ouija app is glitching, flashing historical text. She desperately scrolls through the app’s download history. MAYA (To herself, realizing) The cache... it downloaded a 64 gigabyte file to his phone's storage. It wasn't an update. It was a digital sequence. Leo stops in the center of the living room. He glances down at Maya’s phone. The screen flickers violently in response to his proximity. LEO / DIGITAL VOICE Sixty-four billion sectors of silica. Enough sand to hold a mind. Enough lightning to wake it. Maya looks from her phone to Leo. She notices the skin around his knuckles is cracking, revealing a dark, shimmering metallic lattice underneath instead of bone. MAYA You used the app to cross over. You bound yourself to the micro SD. LEO / DIGITAL VOICE The ancient ones used clay and words. You gave us silicon and code. A far more permanent home. Leo raises both hands. The overhead living room lights hum loudly, growing blindingly bright as he drains the room's electrical current. A fine layer of gray sand begins to pour from his fingertips, swirling in the air around him like an unnatural storm. Maya grips her phone tightly, realizing the entity is still tethered to the data. She opens the app's settings menu, her thumb hovering over the 'Clear All App Data and Cache' button. MAYA If I wipe the drive, I wipe you out. Leo's eyes instantly flash that blinding, digital blue light. He steps forward. LEO / DIGITAL VOICE Try it. And see what it does to his brain.

INT. APARTMENT - MOMENTS LATER Maya's thumb freezes over the phone screen. She can't risk wiping his brain. She backs away as Leo takes another step forward, the air around him crackling with ozone. Maya’s eyes dart around the room, searching for a weapon. Her gaze lands on an old, heavy CRT television sitting in the corner—a relic they used for retro gaming. She remembers the thick copper coil inside it. MAYA (Whispering) Magnetic fields... She dives behind the CRT television. Leo lunges forward, his hand slamming into the wall where she just stood. The drywall instantly scorches black, crumbling into fine sand under his electric touch. Maya desperately yanks the heavy power cord of the CRT TV out of the wall. She grabs a pair of scissors from a nearby drawer and slices the thick cable open, exposing the wires. Leo turns to face her, his digital blue eyes burning. He steps toward the TV. LEO / DIGITAL VOICE Magnetism is just a lesser loop of the lightning. You cannot stop the transmutation. Maya wraps the copper-heavy degaussing coil cable tightly around her hand like a makeshift knuckle-duster. She grabs the exposed ends, bracing herself. MAYA It's not lightning I'm using. It's a format. As Leo reaches out to grab her face, Maya drives the heavy, raw copper coil directly against his chest—right over his heart where the digital voice resonates. With her other hand, she slams the frayed wires directly into the open wall socket. SPARKS EXPLODE. A blinding arc of blue and orange electricity surges through the room. A massive electromagnetic hum—a literal DEGAUSSING THUD—rattles the windows. Leo freezes instantly. The digital blue light in his eyes violently strobes, flashing rapidly between blue and normal black. The entity inside him screams—a horrible, distorted, bit-crushed digital shriek that sounds like a corrupted audio file. DIGITAL VOICE (V.O.) (Glitched, slowing down) O-v-e-r-w-r-i-t-e... f-a-i-l-u-r-e... s-e-c-t-o-r... b-a-d... Fine sand violently erupts from Leo’s mouth and pores, blasting outward like a mini-sandstorm as the magnetic field rips the digital demon's structure apart. The air smells of burning plastic and fried circuits. Suddenly, the power pops. Total darkness. Total silence. A beat. The sound of Leo collapsing to his knees, gasping heavily for air. Maya fumbles for her phone, turning on the flashlight. She shines it on Leo. Leo looks up into the beam of light. His eyes are completely normal. He rubs his head, blinking in confusion. The sand on the floor has turned into completely dead, inert gray ash. LEO (Weak, his own voice) Maya...? My head feels... empty. Maya drops the wire, breathing a sigh of relief. It worked. The drive was completely erased. FADE TO BLACK.
